“Road Signs Re-Imagined” : transforming road signs into motorsport inspired art
Hi, I’m Neil Martin, an artist based in Hampshire, in the UK.
I’m combining my love for cars, motorsport, design and art into something truly unique :
“Road Signs Re-Imagined”, one-of-a-kind upcycled artworks.
Every piece I create begins with a genuine, de-commissioned road sign, each with it’s own story, faded colours and signs of wear from it’s journey on the road. I transform these once functional objects into striking artworks inspired by Formula 1 cars, Le Mans icons, drivers helmets and legendary team liveries, or sometimes simply by a design that sparks my imagination.
The process is a blend of meticulous planning and creativity. I start by sketching out my chosen design on paper so that it fit’s the chosen road signs shape and dimensions, then transfer the finished design onto the sign. Using acrylic and household paints, I bring the artwork to life, blending creativity with craftsmanship to “re-imagine” it into a unique work of art. To honour it’s original character, I lightly age some areas to reveal glimpses of the sign’s past life, from the reflective surface underneath to it’s weathered textures. Finally each piece is sealed with three coats of clear lacquer to ensure it’s unique character is preserved.
